Eileen I think that you could turn just about any event into some sort of learning experience from teaching English.

Eileen,

i like this idea because it will help the students talk to each other and share stories and learn how to use english in a very conversation and relational way - not just a way of saying "thank you" or asking for directions.

When I was abroad, I bought mother's day cards in the countries I was in. Once was in German, so I had to write the translation for her inside, but she loved it. The other was British, (their mother's day is two months ahead of the US, so I had to buy it in advance), and had the word "Mum" all over it. It was fun to use my language and cultural tools at hand to give my mom something different and fun.

Do they have Mother's Day in Italy like they do here in the USA? You might talk about social customs of English speakers compared to the native tounge that they currently use.

I appreciate how you use current events that allow for specialized words but also allow for cultural dialogue.
